What is Green Roofing
Also known as vegetative or eco-roofing, a green roof has a layer of vegetation planted over a waterproofing system installed over a pitched or flat roof. There are 2 types of green roofing systems:
Intensive
With a deeper level of growing substrate, intensive green roofing systems support various plant types. Intensive green roofing requires higher levels of irrigation and ongoing maintenance and can support the heavier weight. Terms used to describe this type of green roof can be referred to as a ‘roof garden’ or a ‘podium roof.’
Extensive
Lightweight with a shallow layer of growing substrate less than 200 mm deep, this type of green roof requires little maintenance, with lower water requirements, and utilizes smaller, low-growing plants like succulents. These types of extensive roofing systems are also called ‘brown roofs’ or ‘Eco roofs.’
